Tennis Everyone?
“Catherine Hickland Returns to Daytime in Capitol, and to the tennis courts in home town”
There is a cause for celebration among the thousands of fans of the daytime serial Texas who are welcoming back Catherine Hickland to daytime with her role as Julie Clegg McCandless on CBS’s Capitol.
Catherine, who began her on-camera career as the original “FLY ME” girl for the national advertising campaign for National Airlines, thereby obtaining her AFTRA card, subsequently spent the early days of her series acting career in New York with the role of Dr. Courtney Marshall in Texas. It was an appearance in the feature film ‘The Last Married Couple in America’ with George Segal and Natalie Wood that brought her to the attention of the Texas producers.
A native of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Catherine returned to her home town a few weeks ago to take up a tennis racquet, something she hasn’t done since she was 12 years old. The occasion was the Linda Carter Tennis Classic, benefiting the Adam Walsh Foundation.
Catherine was originally asked to make a celebrity appearance to show her support, but on the morning of the main event, when several scheduled players had to cancel, she was encouraged to attend the pre-game clinic conducted by tennis pro Chris Evert Lloyd and then join in on the courts.
“They say once you learn to ride a bicycle you never really forget how to do it, and tennis is much the same way,” Catherine observed. “I was a little shaky at first, but then it started to come back to me and I really got into the swing of it—pardon the pun.”
