"Be Prepared"

Just because “Capitol’s” Catherine Hickland was never a Boy Scout herself is no reason why she wouldn’t want to lend her support to this venerable institution. So, when she was asked by the Western Los Angeles Council of the Boy Scouts of America to help with a fund-raising event, she was only too happy to pitch in.

On January 27th, Catherine emceed the 4th Annual “Sports Celebrity Golf Tournament” held at the Wilshire Country Club. (Catherine has never played golf either, but that didn’t stop her.) The event began with breakfast, followed by the tournament itself. Afterwards, Catherine acted as auctioneer during the event’s awards banquet and conducted the bidding of such items as “Knight Rider” memorabilia, signed animated cels from the Hanna-Barbera studios, and a 9-day Mexican cruise for two from Sitmar Cruises. Then, Catherine recognized the day’s winning golf teams and presented them with individual trophies. Each team taking part was augmented with celebrities from the entertainment and sports world, such as Bradley Lockerman, Tom Harmon, Reggie Smith and Steve Benedict.

This was the first time that a celebrity acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event and it obviously had its effect. Don Buford, Tournament Chairman, reported that over $25,000 was raised during the day, with a record $12,000 during the auction alone. These funds will support the full range of Boy Scouting activities in the Western Los Angeles County Council, which serves 65% of Los Angeles county, reaching over 60,000 persons in 1985.

Catherine had a great time during the day and was thrilled with the results. “The Scouts have been around for so long that you tend to take them for granted,” she says. “And people often forget that all of their work is funded by voluntary contributions. So I was happy to do my part for them.”
