Catherine Hickland Takes Some Special Time Off

Catherine Hickland, regularly seen as “Julie McCandless” on the CBS series “Capitol,” took a week off from daytime soaping to spend time with husband David Hasselhoff, but it wasn’t vacation time for the hard-working two-career couple.

Catherine had another (her third) chance to work with David on his NBC “Knight Rider” series. She reprises the role of “Stevie,” Michael Knight’s long lost love from his previous identity, a role she created in a self-written debut on the show two seasons ago.

In this outing there were many special and unique elements to the story, most particularly that the characters of “Stevie” and “Michael” get married, and there was plenty of action for Catherine to become involed in.

Since the show called for a wedding and the two are married in real life, it seemed natural to try and make the ceremony and its trappings as close to real life as possible…but the action got in the way.

“We wanted to use the real wedding gown for the show, but when I saw the script it was clear that the amount of action called for would prohibit that,” Catherine noted. “So, Costume Designer Karen Braverman created not one but three copies of the original gown. How she accomplished that in three days I don’t know, but she did.”

Suffice it to say that the action on the show which necessitated the three dresses (one for Catherine, one for a stunt double and an extra, just in case) was sufficient enough to warrant this extra expense.

“I had a great time working on this particular episode. I got a chance to do some things I hadn’t gotten a chance to do before. The story was close to the one we were hoping for. There were some significant changes, however, and I really can’t say any more right now.”

The many days of shooting, most on location in beautiful Malibu, were spent during a particularly cold spell of California weather, and the stars were called upon to frolic on the beach and in the waves. In this case, when they refer to “the stars” they are, of course, referring to David, Catherine and KITT.

“KITT doesn’t get a chance to go on vacation very often,” says Catherine, “so this was his chance to go kite-flying, and romping on the beach with me and David.” KITT did so on his own—on remote control.

The wedding ceremony which takes place on the show was performed by Henry Cutrona, the same pastor who married David and Catherine in 1984, so, apparently, “Michael” and “Stevie” really got married that cold day in Malibu.

The episode, entitled “The Scent of Roses,” airs January 3 on NBC at 8:00PM.
