Meet the Contestants--Soap Opera Digest Awards Nominees (Female Scene Stealer)

Digest: Where were you when you learned that you had been nominated?
Hickland: I was eating with [Executive Producer] Jill [Farren Phelps], and she said, "Oh, by the way, congrats. You were nominated for a Soap Digest Award." I was absolutely sure that she was confusing me with somebody else because I've never been nominated for one before. I asked for what category, but she didn't know. Then I got a letter saying that I was nominated, and I went the whole weekend not knowing what I was nominated for, but I am more than totally jazzed to be nominated for Female Scene Stealer.

Digest: Who was the first person you told?
Hickland: My husband [Michael E. Knight, Tad, AMC]. He didn't know [about his nomination for Supporting Actor] yet. I think because the [NABET] strike broke the same week that the letter went out to the producers, they didn't pass the word as quickly as they might have if things had been normal.

Digest: What were your best scenes this year?
Hickland: I really don't know. I'd have to have somebody else pick for me.

Digest: Does it make a difference that the fans determine the winners?
Hickland: Yeah, but I don't have any real hopes of winning this, mind you. Louise Sorel [Vivian, DAYS] is known for this kind of work, and I'm new to this. It's my first nomination and c'mon, she's on DAYS OF OUR LIVES! I'm not worried about what my dress is going to look like walking up those stairs. Let's put it that way [laughs].

Digest: Speaking of gowns--what are you going to wear?
Hickland: Susan Gammie, our costume designer, has this really fantastic dress. It's very Grace Kelly-ish. It's just gorgeous.

Digest: Do you and Michael have any other plans while you're out in Los Angeles?
Hickland: Last year, two days after the awards, I got a breast reduction. I don't know how I can top that [laughs]! This year, we've both claimed our vacations. We have an apartment there, and we're going to enjoy our bad selves!
