You Wanted to Know

Question to Catherine Hickland: I read that you were going to France to do a concert. I was surprised to learn that you are a singer, which is what I hope to be someday. I started to study singing when I was 14. When did you start to study? From R. F., Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Answer from Catherine: "I [along with Felicity LaFortune (ex-Laurel, AMC), Eva La Rue (Maria, AMC) and other selected singers] did the concert on December 29, 30 and 31 in Lyons France with the National Symphony of Lyons. The songs we performed were from Broadway shows including West Side Story, Carousel and A Little Night Music.

"I love to sing, but I have to say that I started to study quite a bit later than you did. Actually, it was a little over two years ago when I thought I'd like to go to a teacher and see what I did have. I had sung before, but not professionally; it was mostly in high school and college productions. I had always been a belter. "I was very surprised to learn [from my teacher] that I was a soprano, and that I could be a coloratura soprano. I spent five days a week working on it - and it was there.

"I find a great deal of joy in [singing], and I'm planning to do another concert very soon.
