Product Queen
I think every woman as at least one great feature. Most of us can make it our eyes—we just have to know how to dress them up!
I see a lot of blue eye-shadow in the fashion magazines coming up for fall…but whenever I’ve tried blue eye-shadow, I have always come out looking like I was sucker-punched when I wasn’t looking. Most eye colors look great with earth tones and browns, especially the darker shades. There are many brands to choose from, and I’ve tried most of them.
Christian Dior makes eye-shadow palettes that come five in a kit. There are several shades, but the kit I like best is called “Discretion.” Now the price tag seems steep, but remember that there are five—count ‘em five—colors in one compact and they can be used individually or mixed together. The quality is fantastic. The center color is deep brown, and the other colors include a light peach, a gorgeous tan, an off-white and a burgundy. These shadows are made in France and let’s face it, the French do everything well. (If this is out of your price range, fret not, my little beauties. There are many other good inexpensive options at your local drugstore, which I have listed below.)
Eye-shadow looks great when smudged all over the lid (the lid, not the whole upper eye area), and I find that brown looks good on almost everyone. Above the lid, you should use off-white, light peach or natural. (And don’t forget to put foundation on the lids if you’ve put it on your face that day.) The effect of a dark lid is dramatic and smoldering, and I ask you: Who among us doesn’t want to smolder?
One of the eye-shadow products I don’t recommend is “Shadow Sticks” by Origins. However, being a big Origins fan, I found a fabulous product called “Underwear for Lashes” that you put on your lashes before your mascara, and boy, does it make your lashes long and thick! They also have a way-cool product called “No Puffery” that takes out the puffiness from under your eyes (see last month’s column at www.hickland.com). While you’re at it, check out Origin’s gel cheek color called “Pinch Your Cheeks.” It comes in a little tube, and when you run it across the bridge of your nose and onto your cheeks, you look like you’ve been slightly burned by the sun. Don’t ask me why, but it’s really kinda sexy (for more, call 1-800-ORIGINS).
Next month? Haircare products. And I miss you already!
