American I Do's
The Happy Couple: Catherine Hickland (Lindsay, OLTL) and Michael E. Knight (Tad, AMC)
It’s a Date: June 27, 1992, Malibu, CA
Was your day everything you’d hoped for? “Well, we didn’t have the budget for the type of wedding we wanted,” Hickland says. “But I wasn’t working, either, so I had all this time to devote to putting together my dream wedding. I went to a movie location company and found a mansion where we could get married.”
Was there a color scheme? “Black and white, very formal looking. The bridesmaid dresses matched the tuxes. For bridesmaids I had Melody Thomas Scott [Nikki, YOUNG AND RESTLESS], my sister and one of my best friends, Cindy Bond, Steve Bond’s [ex-Jimmy Lee, GENERAL HOSPITAL] wife.”
What was your wedding song? “Marc Cohn’s ‘True Companion.’ And our first dance song was ‘What a Wonderful World,’ sung by Louis Armstrong. Then I had singers and a band, and they sang music from The Phantom of the Opera and ‘Ave Maria.’ Beautiful things like that.”
Looking back, what do you think of your gown? “At the time, I thought it was the most beautiful dress. Of course, now I look at it and it’s ridiculously puffy.”
Did anything amusing happen? “Michael was late, by about a half hour. I wasn’t anxious because he’s never been on time in his life. Melissa Gilbert’s son Cody was my ring bearer, and when he was walking up the aisle, he was doing such a great job, and then he saw Melissa and went to her. Oh, he was so cute.”
What sort of favors did you give the guests. “I had 150 of those York Peppermint Patties made and had a message hand-written on the front of all of them, in the icing. They were put at everybody’s place setting and people were like, ‘My God, the person who did this must be in the hut house.’ I had practically the Bible put on those Patties!”
And you had beautiful weather? “Of course, I planned it using the Farmer’s Almanac, so I knew there’d be a full moon. I ordered it.”
