Moonlighting

Boys on the Side

Catherine Hickland (Tess, Loving), who conquered Broadway last spring in Les Miserables , is preparing a presentation for a more intimate occasion: her cabaret show Sept. 8 at the Triad, a New York City venue that usually plays host to Broadway belters and up-and-coming musical theater talent.

Joining Hickland are Craig Rubano (Marius, Les Miz), and Broadway performing/recording artist Sean McDermott (ex-Hart, GL). "Sean has one of the most beautiful tenor voices I've heard in my life," Hickland says, "and you know what a fan I am of Craig Rubano. I'm doing solos and some duets with each of the guys, and then they get to do some solos.

"This show, which benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, was my idea," she adds. "It's one of those times where you feel you just have to move ahead and do it. It's all the hit songs from all great shows--Les Miz, Phantom, West Side Story, Miss Saigon. I'm doing a couple of standards, too. I'm still retooling the act."

Conceiving a cabaret act, a daunting prospect to man, is all in a day's work for Hickland. "I'm just going to jump into it like I do everything else. It's scary because I'm responsible for the content. But I'm also excited that I'm finally doing my own show. I don't know if that means it's going to be a great show," she laughs, "but it's a show that I know I would like to see--a funny, romantic, musical evening."
