“Everything was easier for me in prison,” she laughs. “It’s a small cell. I could only wander so much.” Despite the occasional scuffle with Tillie, the work was actually less taxing. “Up until [Lindsay’s imprisonment], I hadn’t had a break in four years. I’ve had a chance to take a breath and find out who I am again outside of work, which is really healthy. When your show is your whole life, which it is when you’re here every [day], you forget a lot of things. You lose perspective on reality. This character is hard to play; she’s complicated and highly charged emotionally. It’s tiring.”
There is a downside to being locked up—and now, on the run. “I feel mousy,” Hickland confesses. “I don’t put the glamour makeup on, and my hair looks heinous. I feel unattractive and not myself. So it will be good to put on my high heels and some shiny lip gloss. It’s the girly things I miss.”
Working with men again will be nice too, right? “Who needs that?” she chuckles. “I don’t care about the ‘men’ part because mine are never right.
