HIT: OLTL’s newest odd couple
While Lindsay and Rex aren’t romantically involved (yet?), they are one of One Life to Live’s most intriguing couples – mainly because there’s so much going on beneath their bleached-blond locks.
Both characters are complex, but they are also very much alike, sharing histories of abandonment and manipulative misfires.
Their similarities don’t make them dull, however, because they are at different stages in their screwed-up lives. Lindsay’s conniving pushed her over the edge to a mental breakdown. She started to make her way back, only to be greeted by the smooth Rex, who appears to be using Lindsay to get back at his ex-wife, Jen. Or could he really be attracted to Lindsay?
Catherine Hickland and John-Paul Lavoisier (Lindsay and Rex) are doing a fabulous job of adding nuance to their characters, bringing a lot more to the stage than what’s on the page. Hickland has contributed a wonderful fragility to the post-breakdown Lindsay, and through subtle gestures Lavoisier has added fascinating layers to Sexy Rexy. When Lindsay gave Rex and expensive business card holder, he was visibly touched. And, for once, it seemed to be because of her gesture, not because of the monetary value of the gift.
Rex – who was shipped off to live with an aunt when we was 5 – thinks he needs money to be happy, but what he’s starting to look for is love. Will he find it in Lindsay?
“Punish the thought,” as his ditsy mom Roxy might say.
