Makeup Call!

Do’s and don’ts from a daytime diva.

Catherine Hickland, a star of ABC’s One Life to Live who began her career as a makeup artist, has returned to her roots. Hickland, 47, has created Cat Cosmetics, a makeup line of universally flattering shades and beauty essentials. “We don’t need a thousand choices,” she says, “only a few key products that actually deliver.” Hickland recently invited WD into her New York studio, where she teaches classes on achieving a naturally beautiful look.

You can do your makeup in under 10 minutes. Divide your face into three areas: complexion & cheeks, eyes and lips.

Foundation
1. Apply base with a flat-edged brush. “Don’t overdo it, start with a small amount,” says Hickland. Blend well along the hairline. Try Hickland’s Cat’s Meow Crème Foundation, $24, which comes with two shades for creating custom color.

2. Follow with a pressed powder. Pat onto skin for even, smooth coverage. Don’t apply powder directly under eyes, because it can accentuate tiny, fine lines. Finish with a light dusting over your lips to help lipstick last longer.

Cheeks
3. With a big, soft brush, sweep bronzer right along the cheekbones, “not above or below them,” says Hickland. Then lightly dust along the forehead close to the hairline, the top of your nose, chin and down the front of your neck.

4. Using a light touch, go over the same areas with blush and blend well; it’s the key to great-looking makeup, according to Hickland.

Eyes
5. Start with the brows. Brush them up and fill in lightly with eyebrow pencil, defining an arch over the center of your eyes. “What God didn’t give us, we can always draw in,” Hickland confides.

6. Use an eye pencil to emphasize eyes. Apply as close to the upper lashline as possible and add just a touch in the outer corners of the lower lashes. Then softly smudge with a small-tip brush or cotton swab. “The line should look like part of your eyelashes,” she explains.

7. Stroke a shimmery pale shadow over the entire eyelid from lashes to brow.

8. Sweep on a matte shade – one that’s slightly darker than your foundation – in the crease of the lid.

Lips
9. Define the shape of your lips with a neutral lip pencil. Draw in a bow, if necessary, to create a pretty pout.

10. The secret to finding your ideal lipstick color? Mix shades! “I never use just one,” says Hickland. “I’ll layer two or three and top everything off with a clear gloss.” Begin with a tone slightly darker than your natural lip color (we recommend the base lipcolor from the Six Kitten Kit) then follow with a brighter color like Cat’s Gold, and finish with a dab of pink gloss at the center of the lips.

The grand finale: mascara
11.”Don’t pump the wand or you’ll end up with clumpy lashes,” cautions Hickland. Apply two coats, starting at the root of the lash and rolling the want in an upward direction.
